Missoula County’s Big Sky Park Trail Restored and Ready for Use

Post Date:10/30/2017 3:15 AM

The perimeter trail at Big Sky Park has served as a popular amenity among park visitors since it was built in 1999. On any given evening, one can expect to see horseback riders, dog walkers, runners and maybe even the occasional cyclist enjoying the 1.7-mile-long natural surface trail. The trail was due for a full-scale restoration project, having deteriorated over time from normal wear and tear and encroaching vegetation.

Missoula County is fortunate to have fantastic partners who work tirelessly to maintain the County’s parks and especially so at Big Sky Park. A member of the Big Sky Park Stewardship Committee, Natalie Harrington, took on the project. Using funding generated through utility leases at the park, Harrington sought an economical solution to complete the work of removing the topsoil layer and then re-grading additional material that could be rolled smooth.

The solution came by way of contacting the original builder of the trail, The Missoula College Heavy Equipment Operation Program. With additional planning assistance from Missoula County Parks, Trails and Open Lands Program, the project came into fruition this autumn. Over several weeks, students applied what they had learned in the classroom to restore the trail. Now completed, we invite you to come out and experience this outstanding recreational resource in a Missoula County Park!
