Measles - It's Not Just a Little Rash

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can be dangerous, especially for young children and babies. There are no cases of Measles in Montana at this time, but we are on watch.

Steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • MMR VACCINE - Ensure you & your family are up to date with the MMR vaccine.
  • SUSPECTED MEASLES - If you suspect you or your family may have measles, DO NOT go to your provider's office! Instead, call your provider to be safely assessed.
  • TRAVEL - Check the measles risk at your destination.

VACCINES - Contact your provider or Missoula City-County Health Department

Measles can be prevented with MMR vaccine. The vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. CDC recommends children get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age. Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR vaccination.

The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
