Municipal Primary - Sept. 9, 2025

Tuesday, Aug. 12 - Late voter registration begins. Voters must appear in person at the Elections Office (Building B) to register to vote or make any changes to their voter registration. 

Wednesday, Aug. 20 - More than 47,000 municipal primary ballots will be mailed to active and provisionally registered voters residing in the City of Missoula. Each ballot will include a mayoral race, and those in Wards 2, 3 and 6 will also include a city council member race. 

10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept.  2 - Election equipment testing. Elections staff will test the tabulators used to count ballots to ensure they are working properly ahead of Election Day. They will also test the ADA-compliant ExpressVote ballot marking devices to ensure they are operating correctly for drop-off locations on Election Day. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the test. 

Tuesday, Sept. 9 - Election Day. Polling places will not be open. Ballots are due by 8 p.m.

What is on the ballot?

All city residents who are registered to vote will receive a ballot to vote for the Mayor of Missoula In addition, Wards 2, 3, and 6 will each have a city council member race. View the candidates who have filed for these races here. This is a reference document only. Questions regarding candidate platforms or initiatives must be directed to the candidate.  

Wards 1, 4, and 5 will advance to the Nov. 4 municipal general election. The full filings are available online.

How can I vote?

This will be a mail-only election. All active and provisionally registered voters who live in the City of Missoula will receive a ballot for the mayoral race. Drop your ballot in the mail with plenty of time for it to arrive by 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9. Postmarks do not count!

Ballot Drop Options Before Election Day

In the days leading up to Election Day, voters can drop off their ballots in person on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Elections Center – Building B, located at 140 N. Russell St. in Missoula.

Ballot Drop Options on Election Day

From 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day only, there will be two drive-thru ballot drop locations:

  • Hellgate Elementary baseball fields (2385 Flynn Lane, just north of the school campus)
  • Missoula County Fairgrounds, between the Fairgrounds and the YMCA off Russell Street

Ballots may also be returned inside the Elections Center - Building B (ADA-voting equipped) on Election Day. 

Return Postage

Missoula County offers pre-paid postage on all mail ballots. Voted ballots may also be returned in person at the Elections Office at 140 N. Russell St. 

Ballot Information

Replacement Ballots - Replacement ballots may be obtained at the Elections Center during open hours.

Undeliverable Ballots - Ballots cannot be forwarded through the U.S. Postal Service. If a mailing address is no longer active, the ballot will be returned to our office. Upon return to our office as undeliverable, we immediately mail a forwardable confirmation postcard to capture the voter’s new address information. If voters wish to pick up their ballot, they may do so in person at the Election Center. If an individual would like to pick up an undeliverable ballot on behalf of another voter, our office must be provided with a signed request granting permission.
