Energy Efficiency Rebates

Rebates for Energy Efficient Home Appliances

Are you thinking about replacing your water heater? Looking to purchase one that will save you money while helping you do your part for climate change? Did you purchase a water heater on or after May 1, 2025, and are looking for a rebate?

The City of Missoula and Missoula County are partnering to offer a $1,435 rebate for heat pump water heaters for projects completed in Missoula County. Plus, expanded federal tax credits can now likely cover 30% of project costs, and you may be eligible for an additional incentive from your electric utility provider!

More than 500 types of electric heat pump water heaters are eligible for this rebate. A full list is available online. If you have difficulty downloading the .pdf, please contact us at the information below.

If you haven’t yet purchased a water heater, you can apply today and get pre-qualified for a rebate. If you’ve already purchased a heat pump water heater, you are eligible for a rebate if the purchase was made after May 1, 2025, pending funding availability. Click the buttons below to fill out the correct application below to check your eligibility.

If you purchased your water heater after June 1, 2023 but before May 1, 2025, you're still eligible for our old $575 rebate, which was funded by a different grant. Call us and we send you the application for the old rebate.

Please note that applicants must include a copy of their plumbing permit and proof of final inspection to receive their rebate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heat pump water heaters are ultra efficient and offer several benefits to both save you money and keep you comfortable:

  • Warm your water without warming the planet.
  • In most cases, heat pump water heaters can lower your energy costs.
  • These appliances are powered by electricity and won't create dangerous indoor air quality, unlike leaky methane or propane water heaters.

It depends on your home, power use and the type of fuel that your old heater runs on. On average, customers switching from an electric resistance water heater can expect to save between $200 and $600 annually.

If you purchased your heat pump water heater after May 1, 2025, you can receive $1,435.

If you purchased your heat pump water heater between June 1, 2023 and May 1, 2025, you can receive $575.

We anticipate being able to offer approximately 40 additional rebates by June 2026. The funding is distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis until the funding is exhausted, though one of the grants funding the rebate is only accessible until the end of June 2026. About 50 residents took advantage of the original $575 rebate.

Yes. You will need a plumbing permit to complete this project, even if you are installing the water heater without a contractor. Click here for more information. Proof of a plumbing permit is required to receive your rebate.

You will have 30 days after pre-approval to purchase and install a qualifying product. If your project is delayed, you may request to extend their rebate reservation at any time before their 30-day window lapses. We can only guarantee one 30-day extension, though a second extension may be possible.

The majority of the funding is provided by an Energy Efficiency Block Grant. Some legacy funding was provided by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.

Products that are eligible for this rebate are also likely eligible for a 30% tax credit through the Inflation Reduction Act. Information on this rebate, and the accompanying tax credit, are available on ElectrifyMissoula.org

Residents who are also customers of Missoula Electric Coop may be eligible for an additional rebate through the utility. For more information, visit https://missoulaelectric.com/heat-pump-water-heaters/

Residents who are customers of NorthWestern Energy may be eligible for a rebate from their utility as well. Learn more by clicking here.

The Inflation Reduction Act included two sets of tools to help support energy efficient appliances. One was tax credits (mentioned above). The other is a rebate program.

The IRA rebate program, which is set to provide rebates to homeowners and renters, does not exist yet, and the change in federal administration creates uncertainty as to the future of the IRA’s envisioned home energy rebates. This program is a bridge to potential future rebates.
