Child Passenger Safety

Montana law requires children to be properly restrained in a safety or booster seat until age 6 or 60 pounds. However, best practices suggest that children should ride in safety seats or booster seats until age 8 or 80 pounds.

Studies have shown that car seats significantly lower the risk of serious injury in children. Children aged 4 to 8 who are properly restrained in belt-positioning booster seats were 45% less likely to be injured than children who were using the vehicle seat belt.

You also need to use child car safety seats correctly. Avoid these top 5 problems when installing and child safety seats. If you are uncertain about whether or not your child's seat is installed correctly you can make an appointment with a fitting station:

Teen Seat Belt Use

The Montana Plan2Live program targets seatbelt and DUI information to young adults, including survivor stories.

Adult Seat Belt Use

Pickup trucks are twice as likely to roll over than cars. Your chances of surviving a rollover are much better if you are wearing a seat belt. The goal of the  Buckle Up in Your Truck campaign is fewer serious injuries and deaths from people who aren't wearing seatbelts in rollover crashes.

There is room to live within a vehicle's reinforced passenger compartment if you are buckled up during a crash. The Missoula City-County Health Department uses the Respect the Cage display (funded by the Montana Dept. of Transportation) to spread this message.Soon this display will be available for use statewide.
