Commissioner Selected for Prestigious Harvard Government Program
Posted on July 01, 2025

Missoula County Commissioner Josh Slotnick will spend most of July honing his leadership and governance skills as a participant in Harvard University’s prestigious Senior Executives in State and Local Government program.
Slotnick will head to Cambridge, Massachusetts, July 7-25, where he’ll convene with more than 70 leaders from around the country and the world for three weeks of intensive learning, leadership development and peer exchange at the university’s world-renowned John F. Kennedy School of Government. Participants represent a diverse mix of mayors, city managers, state agency directors, county commissioners, law enforcement officials and other senior leaders in public service.
“At Missoula County, we face tremendous opportunities and complex challenges,” Slotnick said. “To respond as effectively as possible to the demands of this unique historical moment, I applied to this program and was fortunate enough to be accepted and receive a scholarship. This July I’ll learn alongside leaders from all over and from some of the foremost experts in the world on local government. I expect to return with new tools, ideas and inspiration to better work with the people of Missoula County.”
Slotnick will participate in dozens of traditional and hands-on learning experiences throughout the program, including sessions such as “Creating Public Value,” “Rural Democracy” and “Creating Value through Negotiating Across Differences.” Tuition for the program is $17,900, but because Slotnick received a scholarship, Missoula County will only pay $1,000.
Established in 1979 and led by renowned faculty from the Harvard Kennedy School, the program focuses on real-world problem solving, crisis management, negotiation and leading in times of change. It offers a unique opportunity for senior officials to apply lessons in real time using real-life case studies, ultimately returning to their communities with renewed insight and skills.
