Current Road Projects
In 2017, Missoula County solicited a geotechnical engineering report of approximately 2.8 miles of hillside roadway, beginning from about 0.4 miles south of the intersection of Big Flat Road and Sherman Gulch Road and then extending north and west along Big Flat Road to the intersection of Big Flat Road at the Deep Creek/South Side road intersection near the old Harpers Bridge crossing. This study was conducted to find solutions for landslide issues ad general repair concerns for this section of road.
The Road Department completed Phase 1 of a long-awaited project on Deschamps Lane in Oct. 2018:
- Improved site visibility heading west from Roller Coaster Rd spanning in both north and southward directions onto Deschamps Lane.
- Paved 900' of Roller Coaster Rd from the Deschamps Lane intersection east to Copter Lane.
- Paved 400' from the railroad tracks heading south on Deschamps Lane.
- Cut into hill on north side of railroad tracks, starting at the tracks and going north 500 feet.
Phase 2 was completed the summer of 2023 and included continued work north Moccasin Ln, fixing the road alignment through the intersection and paving.
Proposed work for phase 3 includes straightening the S-curve and paving to the LaValle Creek bridge. Phase 3 may begin in 2025, depending on staff time, money, regular maintenance priorities and emergency work issues.
In 2024, Missoula County received a Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant from the US Dept. of Transportation for $24 million towards improvements on Highway 200 through East Missoula. This grant was awarded to Missoula County, the City of Missoula, the Missoula Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Montana Dept. of Transportation. Visit the MPO's website to see the full plan.
Multiple upgrades to South Avenue are in planning. The Reserve Street to Clements Road section received a $9.3 million Safe Streets for All Grant in 2023. Click here to see the plans.
The Clements Road to Blue Mountain Road section remains unfunded but the plans are available online.
