Concealed Weapons Permits
The Missoula County Sheriff's Office issues Concealed Weapons Permits (CWP) in accordance with Montana State Law. If you are interested in acquiring your own CWP, you will need to complete an APPLICATION, be fingerprinted, and a criminal history background check will be conducted before your permit is issued.
Appointments are required and are available Tuesday through Thursday from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.
Types of permits
45-8-321. Permit to carry concealed weapon, MCA
Proof of Firearms Training:
Examples that meet firearms training requirement:
- Proof of firearms competency: Mont. Code Ann. § 45-8-321 (3)
- Hunter’s Safety Course Certification
- Completion of a firearms safety or training course
- The course must be approved or conducted by FWP, a similar agency of another state, a national firearms association, law enforcement agency, institute of higher education, or an organization that uses instructors certified by a national firearms association
- Proof of license and training from another state
- Possession of a license from another state to carry a firearm concealed or otherwise, that is granted by that state upon completion of a course described above
- Military Qualification
- Evidence that the applicant, during military service, was found to be qualified to operate firearms, including handgun. A DD 214 will show your weapons qualifications. It must show handgun qualification to be adequate for your CWP proof of competency.
Fees:
- $28.00 Background investigation, Mont. Code Ann. § 45-8-322 (5) & D.O.J. set fee schedule.
- $5.00 Fingerprints. Not required for renewals. Mont. Code Ann. § 45-8-322 (4).
- $50.00 Permit issuance. Mont. Code Ann. § 45-8-322 (3).

Proof of Firearms Competency:
Must have completed a course that fits these criteria within 12 months of applying for this permit.
45-8-312 A qualifying handgun course is any handgun course approved by a law enforcement agency that includes instruction in each of the following:
- laws relating to firearms and the use of force.
- the basic concepts of the safe and responsible use of handguns.
- self-defense principles; and
- live fire training, including the firing of at least 98 rounds of ammunition by the student.

Renewals are accepted on a walk-in basis and do not require an appointment. Renewal applications must be submitted in-person, during business hours, Monday from Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mailed renewals will not be accepted.

Please note: If you are applying for a Concealed Weapon Permit Renewal, please bring any court documents that you may have in relation to your criminal history. Even if you provided these documents for the initial application, our office conducts thorough backgrounds for every application, including renewals, and having court documentation of case dispositions, dismissals, and deferrals will assist with the review process.
How to Apply
New Applicants
New applicants must schedule an appointment, either ONLINE or by calling 406-258-4810. Appointments are available, Tuesday through Thursday from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.
Complete the CWP APPLICATION prior to your appointment. Be sure to read the Application Guidelines prior to your appointment to ensure no delays in the process.
**Do not sign the application prior to visiting our office. It must be signed in the presence of the Sheriff or their designee.**
