Building Permits & Inspections

The staff at the Missoula County Building Division is here to help you get a permit and pass inspections. The Building Division is responsible for ensuring the safety of structures within Missoula County.

Our job is to make sure your building plans meet all the local, state and international building codes to ensure your structure is safe.

All building inspectors are certified through a series of tests and spend time in the community inspecting different build projects. To be as efficient as possible, all Missoula County inspectors are combination inspectors, so they can look at all aspects of a project when on site. Permit specialists are also certified and work with contractors and landowners through the construction permit intake process. They also facilitate various other permits, like electrical, mechanical, plumbing, address/approach, excavation and land use to name a few.

The Building Division works closely with the Planning, Development and Sustainability Department as well as the Environmental Health Department to permit structures within the County. Getting a permit for your building project is not only required by law, but it can reduce the odds of house fires, flood damage, structural problems, environmental contamination and unsafe drinking water. Having the proper permit can help you avoid future maintenance costs, while protecting the investment in your structure.
